Ahimsa - Guitar Symphony No. 1
Composed by Zach Huskey
Unlike anything you have ever heard before, this composition will undoubtedly
have a remarkable impact on both classical and rock composers.
Although "Ahimsa" appears in our book catalog, "Ahimsa"
is a music score. The piece contains over 250 pages of music, scored for
seven guitars (standard and prepared), five electric bass guitars (standard
and bowed), seven percussion instruments and one Bamboo Forest Caller.
It runs the gamut from the very dissonant to the sublime. For example,
some of the guitar parts are written for "prepared guitar" (ie.
paper clips attached at certain points on the fret board) and at least
one guitar part in one movement requires the performer to strike the strings
with fresh pine needles. This piece also contains various percussion instruments
and some bowed electric bass parts.
The four movements of the symphony are: Part I - Birth, Part II - Suffering,
Part III - Questioning, and Part IV - Awakening. "Ahimsa" is
not written in standard music notation. Mr. Huskey has created a easy
to learn/play form of tabulature designed to allow the unschooled musician
to be able to appreciate and perform this guitar symphony.
Ahimsa is a Hindu word meaning non-harming/nurturing.
Dali's Llama Records plans to release Mr. Huskey's first guitar symphony
on cd in the Spring of 2003. We can assure you that this music is unlike
anything you have ever heard before.
